Perth Web Accessibility Meet-up08/09/2015 4:51am
The Perth Web Accessibility Meet-up held its regular meeting at the Milk & Honey Café on James Street in Northbridge on Tuesday, August 18th.
Dr Scott Hollier of Media Access Australia discussed some of the issues associated with running MAA’s Professional Certificate in Web Accessibility in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Normally this course runs over six weeks in a fully online mode, in conjunction with MAA and the University of South Australia. MAA was asked to run the course on location for approximately 25 participants and Scott conducted the course along with an MAA colleague. This request to run the course originated by way Saudi Arabia signing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and requiring expert advice to start bringing out compliance in their country.
According to Scott, one of the most critical issues involved with website accessibility is the problem with reliance on the English language. The WCAG document in Arabic is still in draft form, with a formal adoption date not yet confirmed. In addition, most of the tools for assessment as well as the English language dominance on the web continue to make it very difficult to bring about accessibility in non-English speaking countries. If you would like more information on the Professional Certificate in Web Accessibility, please contact Scott Hollier at Media Access Australia.
Vivienne Conway also provided a brief wrap-up of the Perth Web Accessibility Camp held July 22nd in Perth, WA. There were 121 delegates to this one-day event and the feed-back thus far has been very positive. The sponsors to the event, Bankwest, Permeance Technologies and The Paciello Group contributed greatly to a superb camp this year and we look for more of the same next year. Slides from some of the presentations are available at PWAC Website - Resources. People interested in becoming involved, should contact Vivienne Conway at email@example.com.
